St. Luke's Hospital Cancer & Infusion Center

We can now formally announce a game-changing development for cancer care. Dr. Joe Stephenson, one of the nation's top oncologists and hematologists, is heading up the St. Luke's Cancer & Infusion Center!

Joe Stephenson, MD,
Hematology/Oncology

With Dr. Stephenson at the helm of our Cancer & Infusion Center, we now offer a pathway to some of the most leading-edge thinking and treatment options found anywhere in the world. We've greatly expanded the possibilities for Polk County, and with local labs, we have drastically reduced wait times for results. You no longer need to travel out of the region to receive the highest quality cancer care. So many patients from "around the world" have traveled to see him, and now you can see him right here in Polk County, NC!

"Local is always better," said Dr. Stephenson. "A Cancer diagnosis involves a team." That team includes the family, the healthcare provider staff, and community support. We all play a vital role in caring for the patient through this process. In concert with surrounding tertiary level providers, St. Luke's now offers total oncological medical care.

Oncology is multi-disciplinary and having the right team is paramount. Evidence-based medicine drives the practice. If you know the evidence, the treatment is straightforward. Overlaying the evidence with the doctor's experience in navigating the journey will build that sense of community trust."

Dr. Stephenson points out that "If you have a cancer diagnosis of any kind, please ask your healthcare provider for a referral to see me. I can direct your course of care here locally. And for additional care not offered on the St. Luke's campus, I can personally coordinate your treatment with my colleagues at Prisma Health Cancer Institute or other nearby providers."

Dr. Stephenson is an excellent doctor who profoundly knows the practice of oncology and hematology. He's also very involved in cancer research at the molecular level, the science behind the therapy.

Choose to stay close to home with a referral from your attending physician or simply make an appointment yourself. The center features four individual bays and two private treatment rooms for chemotherapy, IV therapy, or blood transfusions. Floor-to-ceiling views of nature provide peaceful surroundings, but flat-screen televisions are available for distraction if needed during treatments.

Chemotherapy-certified nurses, pharmacists, and advanced care practitioners provide exceptional care and attentive treatment in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
