The volunteers
of St. Luke's Hospital provide warm, caring and compassionate care to
patients, their families and our staff. From clerical positions
to courier routes to the thrift shop, our volunteers have the opportunity
to lend a helping hand in their own special way. Volunteers typically
contribute approximately 2-4 hours each week and enjoy benefits such
as free flu shots and a free beverage during each shift, or a free meal
if on duty at mealtime. Some volunteer opportunities include:
-
Cherry
Smocks: These volunteers are responsible for the delivery of juice
and daily newspapers to our patients each morning.
-
Daily
Couriers: The a.m. couriers are responsible for delivering lab and
x-ray reports to Pardee Hospital and the Pathology Lab in Hendersonville
on a daily basis. The p.m. volunteers deliver lab results and
mail to all local physician's offices.
-
Gift
Shop: Volunteers in the Gift Shop manage the daily operations of the
shop including all merchandise sales and keeping the shelves stocked
and tidy.
-
Radiology:
Those who volunteer at the radiology reception desk enjoy a fast-paced
day of greeting patients, entering their information into the computer,
and pulling previous films. Morning and afternoon/evening shifts
are available.
-
Reception
Desk: These volunteers are among the friendliest you'll find!
They are responsible for greeting visitors and assisting with patient
information, such as directions to patient rooms and other departments
within the hospital.
-
WINGS:
On the "WINGS" of these special volunteers, all Interdepartmental
mail is delivered daily. Two shifts are offered each day.
-
Courtesy:
Volunteers are responsible for delivery of patient mail and flowers
each afternoon.
-
Print
Shop: This ambitious group contributes to the hospital by running
the in-house print shop. They print forms, business cards and
most all of the hospital's printed materials.
-
Clerical:
Volunteers are also available in the Business Office and Medical Records
for such tasks as filing and computer input.
-
Thrift
Shop: The St. Luke's Hospital Thrift Shop is completely managed by
volunteers. From the generous donations of the community, the shop
brings in proceeds of over $100,000 annually. It is located
in downtown Tryon and operates Monday - Friday 10:00 a.m. until 4:00
p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
-
Junior
Volunteers: We also offer opportunities for local high school students
to volunteer on Saturday mornings delivering juice to patient rooms.
The St. Luke's
Auxiliary also contributes to the hospital and the community with the
Tree of Hope, Medical Alert units, annual scholarships and donations
to benefit the scholarship program
-
The
Tree of Hope is an annual campaign at Easter. Lights for the
Tree are sold in memory of loved ones for $3.00 each.
-
Medical
Alert units are purchased through the auxiliary and/or hospital and
installed into the homes of local elderly or disabled citizens.
Our volunteers provide all installation and maintenance for these
units.
-
Scholarships
are provided to local High School graduates, area citizens and hospital
employees who are entering higher education in the healthcare field,
especially areas of critical need. The recipients give back
to St. Luke's Hospital by signing a 1-year contract for each year
of financial aid given.
-
From
monies generated through the Thrift Shop, Gift Shop and other Auxiliary
functions, over $100,000 is donated annually to the hospital for the
purchase of new equipment and/or other hospital needs.
New volunteers
are always welcome. Contact Connie Kuykendall at (828) 894-3311
for information on available volunteer opportunities.
