St. Luke’s Hospital Outpatient Rehab Department on the Move

St. Luke’s Outpatient Rehabilitation Center has moved to 799B W. Mills Street, Columbus. This new location is in the Columbus Professional Center (on Highway 108 between Kentucky Fried Chicken and Mountain View BBQ).

This convenient location includes an open gym and private treatment rooms where the licensed, experienced staff motivate, educate and initiate personalized rehab care to help patients on the road to recovery. Using exercise, empowerment and treatment modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, traction and iontophoresis, the staff provides one on one attentive care and a wide range of services to help clients reach their maximum level of function.

“Motivation, education and support are vital to patients who are recovering from joint surgery, accidents, work related injuries, sprains and strains, and neurological problems,” said Scott McDermott, licensed occupational therapist and director of the St. Luke’s Rehab Services. “Depending on recovery, some patients may require more time in the center with a therapist. Others can learn exercises to practice at home.”

McDermott, director of St. Luke’s rehab services for inpatients and outpatients, also provides one-on-one care to assist patients with activities for daily living following illness, injury or surgery affecting hands and upper extremities. In addition, he is certified by the Arthritis Foundation to teach an Arthritis Self-Help Course designed to reduce the impact arthritis can have on people’s lives and encourage a positive approach to the problem.

In addition to McDermott, the Rehab Staff includes Teri Kirk, certified occupational therapy assistant; Laura Walker, Linda Stroud and Andrea Cline, licensed physical therapy assistants; Bryan Federico, Steve Duncan, Jim Sullenberger, Diana Blanton and Sarah Baxley, licensed physical therapists; Jenelle Satterfield, rehab tech; and Colden O’Dell, rehab administrative assistant, who manages the office, patient scheduling and insurance pre-certification. All patients seen at St. Luke’s Rehab are treated only by fully educated and state licensed professionals.

St. Luke’s Rehab Services also include Speech Therapy for people recovering from the effects of a stroke and for those with other speech or swallowing disorders. Teresa Mace, a certified speech pathologist, works one-on-one with her patients who require alternative methods of communicating or those who face cognitive problems due to stroke or injury and need to “retrain the brain.”

Mace has completed advanced training to provide neuromuscular electrical stimulation to treat swallowing disorders. VitalStim Therapy is the only FDA-approved treatment for use on the throat to increase function of the swallowing muscles. At the same time, our trained speech pathologist helps patients “re-educate” their oral motor muscles through rehabilitation therapy.

Whether it’s learning to swallow following a stroke or recovering from a knee replacement, patients are treated with courtesy and respect by the licensed, professional staff at St. Luke’s Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Center where services are provided in a pleasant, friendly environment. With professional skills and personal interaction, the rehab staff of works one-on-one to help patients back to work and play, for healthier living.

According to McDermott, the outpatient center accepts most insurance plans, but it’s extremely important for physicians and patients with Medicare to know there will be no monetary cap or limit on the number of visits to a hospital-based outpatient rehab center as long as medical necessity is met.

“This insures patients will receive a continuum of care from the same professionals. Privately owned rehab clinics in many cases are limited on the number of visits a Medicare patient can be treated before the patient is either discharged and readmitted to another facility that is hospital-based or the patient is asked to unnecessarily pay for skilled therapy services privately out of their own pockets,” McDermott said.

For a minimal charge, the new outpatient center also offers an incentive program for patients who want to continue working out and getting stronger after they have been discharged from therapy.

St. Luke's is going Smoke Free on Nov. 17!

No Butts About It: St. Luke's Is Going Smokefree On Nov. 17, 2005, Great American Smokeout Day, St. Luke's Hospital will become a smokefree environment. As you know, smoking is already prohibited inside our building. The new policy will extend that ban, prohibiting smoking both inside and on the grounds of St. Luke's Hospital. This new policy will affect patients, their visitors, all staff members, physicians, volunteers and contractors.

We hope you will support this positive change and help ensure a smooth transition of the new policy. We believe that as healthcare providers, we must also set the example, make a commitment to wellness and model healthy behaviors.

Our goals are to have no tobacco use visible to any patients, to keep our entrances free from smoke, and to encourage and support our staff members who currently smoke to quit for their own health.

We recognize this change will be difficult for some. St. Luke's will continue to provide smoking cessation classes as well as other resources to assist smokers during this transition. It's our sincere hope that this transition will go smoothly as we communicate our
new policy during the coming months.

Special packets will be distributed to patients, visitors, volunteers and staff who need help coping with the stress of not smoking. As in the past, patients will have access to nicotine replacements to help them deal with hospitalization. Patients in the Gero-Psych unit are the only exemptions to the new policy.

Thank you for your support as we take this important step to create a healthier environment for our patients and a smokefree workplace for our staff. As a provider for health and wellness, St. Luke's is making this change to promote the health of our staff, patients and the community.
