Job Summary: The principal responsibility of an RRT is to perform respiratory care procedures as prescribed, in accordance with department policies and approved procedures. The RRT may also be called upon for expert advice in matters of cardiopulmonary care. The RRT will share in the clinical evaluation of care, including the establishment of therapeutic objectives and the review of care.

St. Luke’s Hospital Criteria Based Performance Standards, Hospital Policies, Joint Commission Regulations, and various other laws/regulations require that we assess the ongoing competency of our staff to assure that the staff maintains competency to perform their duties proficiently. Competency evaluation may include tests for knowledge, demonstration of skills and direct observation of performance.


Regulatory Requirements:
Graduate of a school of Respiratory Care that is approved by the Joint Review Committee for Respiratory Therapy Education.
Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care as an RRT.
At least one-year experience is preferred.
Must pursue programs of continuing education consistent with requirements of the hospital and must update and maintain professional knowledge and skills related to all aspects of respiratory care.
Certified in BLS, ACLS, and PALS.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Administers therapeutic gases, such as oxygen, as prescribed, in accordance with accepted procedures.
Administers positive pressure breathing treatments as prescribed.
Administers prescribed medications via inhalation.
Administers humidified therapeutic gases, including high-humidity therapy as prescribed.
Induces a sputum specimen from patient for cytological or bacterial examination.
Performs bronchial drainage and chest physiotherapy as outlined in department policy and procedure.
Performs incentive spirometry treatments as prescribed.
Establishes, maintains, monitors, and evaluates continuous ventilatory support.
Participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Performs airway care, including tracheobronchial aspiration and other procedures aimed at establishing and/or maintaining natural or artificial airways as outlined in the department policies and procedures
Is required to work a flexible 12-hour shift with on-call thereafter.
Performs sampling and analysis of arterial blood as described in the department policies and procedures.
Performs pulmonary function studies in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Performs and/or assists in special diagnostic procedures as required by the department, such as 24- and 48-hour Holter monitoring and Ambulatory Blood Pressure monitoring.
Performs regular equipment maintenance, preparation and cleaning.
Responsible for documenting procedures in the medical record and department files.
The RRT may be assigned additional duties by the Respiratory Care Director and/or Medical Director, which require clinical judgment.


Essential Functions:
The RT will adhere to the practice guidelines for Service Excellence using the Studer Model and will contribute to the partnership among care givers, patients and families to provide safe and effective excellent care.
