JOB SUMMARY:
Performs cardiac ultrasound studies including 2D, M-mode, pulsed and color flow, stress echo and TEE in the hospital setting. Technologist performs all duties as a Radiologic Technologist and/or Mammography Technologist.
Operates Ultrasound equipment to make clinical diagnostic images as directed by physician. Must produce high quality images; prepare room and patients for procedure(s), assist Cardiologist in procedures.
St. Luke’s Hospital Criteria Based Performance Standards, Hospital Policies, Joint Commission Regulations, and various other laws/regulations require that we assess the ongoing competency of our staff to assure that the staff maintains competency to perform their duties proficiently. Competency evaluation may include tests for knowledge, demonstration of skills and direct observation of performance.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of a cardiac ultrasound training program required. Completion of registry in Echocardiography, RCS (registered cardiac sonographer) or RDCS (registered diagnostic cardiac sonographer). Must be certified in BLS and ACLS.
Minimum 5 years of sonography experience required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Must be proficient in basic echo, stress echo, TEE and 3D and advanced procedures. Must have an understanding of pathology, including knowledge of diseases, anomalies and abnormalities which influence performance and procedures. Must be proficient in hospital reporting systems.
Must have the ability to interpret information in terms of patient needs; must have an understanding of the range of treatment needed by patients.
The Echo Technologist will be competent to perform basic life support and advanced cardiac life support. Competency of this will be evidenced by certification.
Must possess strong interpersonal and patient care skills, be team oriented and willing to perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS:
Must be in good physical condition and able to withstand the stress and demands of an active position. Must be able to withstand many long hours of standing, walking, stooping, bending, and sitting. Must be able to lift or move patients and equipment used. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, the public, and other agencies. Must be able to respond calmly and efficiently in a crisis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs diagnostic echocardiograms, stress echo and TEE procedures as ordered by providers. Performs procedures according to established standards and practices under the direction of the Radiology Manager and Cardiologist. Collaborates with physician to ensure quality patient care.
Obtains and examines the order to include patient name, date of birth, requested procedure, clinical information (reason for exam), requesting physician’s signature, date and time of order, and any other special notes or comments. Evaluate patients’ clinical history for proper clinical indicators and possible contraindications for procedures requested.
Receives patient in a pleasant and efficient manner and thoroughly explains the procedure to be performed and possible side effects to facilitate cooperation and alleviate patient anxiety.
Operates equipment used to perform echocardiograms. Performs portable diagnostic echocardiograms as needed.
Starts IVs for diagnostic saline and contrast echocardiograms as needed. Obtains consents as required per procedure.
Records quality information while performing echocardiographic imaging and following procedural guidelines and protocols.
Practices patient safety by performing hand washing or using hand sanitizer before beginning the procedure. Explains to the patient that they are washing their hands for the patient’s safety. Wears appropriate PPE.
As needed, performs general office duties answering phone, checking in patients, handling call reports and Emergency Room physician disagrees, burning CD’s, etc. Functions as a department receptionist as requested, assist with patient phone calls to answer technical questions.
Restocks and cleans rooms daily. Keeps equipment clean.
When requested, is willing to adjust personal schedule to complete workload; make certain that all ordered procedures will be completed even if it involves staying past one’s shift. Takes call as needed.
Begins and ends study in the EHR and makes sure images are available for Cardiologist to dictate. Ensures all exams are resulted and finalized in the EMR.
Ensures all charges are accurate and match exam performed.
Abides by all regulatory guidelines.
Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Must be able to communicate with patients, customers, other departments, and physicians in an articulate manner.
Performs Quality Metrics Activities as assigned.
