Hyperbaric Oxygen
Therapy is a medical treatment that uses pressurized oxygen to assist
in healing chronic wounds. A chronic, nonhealing wound is defined as
one that does not show notable improvement after four weeks, or has
not healed after an eight week period.
Many wounds can
be treated with Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy by increasing the amount of
oxygen in the blood that is circulated to body tissues. Hyperbaric Oxygen
Therapy can also be beneficial for the treatment of:
• Gas Gangrene
• Gas Embolisim
• Diabetic Wounds
• Progressive Necrotizing Infections
• Compromised Skin Grafts and Flaps
• Acute Traumatic Peripheral Ischemia & Crush Injuries
• Osteomyelitis, Osteoradionecrosis and Soft Tissue Radionecrosis
• Acute Carbon Monoxide and Cyanide Poisoning and
Decompression Illness
What to expect
A patient’s first visit to the St. Luke’s
Regional Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center will consist of:
• Consultation with a physician
• Lab work to determine the wound’s ability to heal on its
own
• Treatment of any infections with antibiotics
• Measurements to determine the stage of the wound
• Debriedment and appropriate dressings of wounds
The patient will then be scheduled for weekly assessments and further
debriedment, if necessary until the wound has healed. The wound will
also be evaluated to determine if Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy will be
beneficial.
The
Chamber
The Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber allows patients to relax
in a see-through and atmosphere-controlled environment. Patients will
lie comfortably in the chamber and can watch television, listen to music,
take a nap or converse with the staff during treatment. Hyperbaric Oxygen
treatments are typically given for periods between 90 and 120 minutes.
Average treatments are performed once each day, 5 days a week until
the wound is healed.
Personal items such as jewelry, personal hygiene items, books or magazines
are not permitted inside the chamber. Patients will also be asked to
remove hearing aids or dentures.
The Regional Hyperbaric
and Wound Care Center at St. Luke's
The St. Luke’s Regional Hyperbaric and Wound Care
Center was established in February of 2003 to meet the growing need for
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Polk County and the surrounding area. Providing
the latest technology in wound therapy, the center conveniently resides
on the St. Luke’s Hospital campus.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can be a successful adjunct treatment option
for patients who suffer from non-healing wounds.
As part of the comprehensive wound care program available at the St. Luke’s
Regional Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can
eliminate the pain of nonhealing wounds.
