Gordon D. Schneider, Ph.D., HSP-P received the 2014 award by Western North Carolina Psychological Association for his work in the area of integrating mental health with primary medicine. Every year a physician and a psychologist are recognized for outstanding service in their field, and this year Dr. Schneider and Dr. Alan Baumgarten of Asheville Family Health Center were awarded the William Bruce Award for their contributions to promoting integrated care in our region.
Dr. Schneider is a licensed psychologist practicing full-time in a solo practice at Lifespan Psychological Services, which has been co-located with Foothills Family Medical Associates in Columbus for the past 13 years. His scope of practice provides care to a wide range of individuals, consultation with physicians and agencies, and supervision of other clinicians.
He came to Polk County in 1989 to direct the Polk County Mental Health Center and eventually directed both Polk and Rutherford County's center-based mental health services. He assisted Dr. Robert Ratcliffe and Dr. Chuck Baber in beginning the geriatric psychiatric unit at St. Luke's Hospital in Columbus and worked with them at St. Luke's Center of Behavioral Medicine in the 90's. He anticipated the dissolution of the community mental health system and began full-time private practice in 2001.
Dr. Schneider has consulted at various facilities in our region and was selected by the regional Medicaid administrator of mental health services to serve as the psychological consultant to assist with privileging clinicians in our region. He also worked with concerned citizens and professionals to develop an integrated healthcare program in Polk County for anyone, regardless of insurance coverage. In addition, he served as the clinical director of Polk Wellness Center until 2012.
A member of St. Luke's Hospital's Medical Staff, Dr. Schneider has expanded his involvement in his field over the past 10 years. He participates on the North Carolina Psychological Association's Division of Independent Professional Practice Board of Directors and the North Carolina Psychological Association's Long Range Planning Committee, which is focused on integrating primary medicine with behavioral healthcare and developing models for North Carolina.
Dr. Schneider's office is located at 801 West Mills Street, Suite B, in Columbus Professional Center. The office number is 894-2300.
