St. Luke's Hospital Departments Recognition for Excellent Patient Satisfaction

The staff and medical staff of St. Luke's Hospital have been nationally recognized for their outstanding job of providing quality care to patients, once again rising to the top in patient satisfaction. The departments nationally recognized by Professional Research Consultants (PRC) were: Inpatient Services for Overall Rating, Pain Management, Communication with Doctors and Overall Quality of Care, and Outpatient Radiology Services for Overall Quality of Care. Each received PRC's Five Star award for reaching the top 10 percent of hospitals that scored at or above the 90th percentile. It is based on the percentage of patients who rate the facility "Excellent" for Overall Quality of Care.

Outpatient Services (Radiology, Lab and Rehabilitation) also received recognition for their overall quality of care with a Four Star Award for scoring in the top 25% of other hospitals that scored between the 75th and 89th percentile. It is also based on the percentage of patients who rate the facility "Excellent" for Overall Quality of Care.

PRC is an approved national vendor for the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, a standardized survey to measure and compare the hospital experience. However, for additional benchmarks in the healthcare industry, St. Luke's Hospital transitioned to Press Ganey last spring for patient satisfaction measurement.

Vendors like PRC and Press Ganey are approved by the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid (CMS) to perform confidential interviews to assess a patient's perceptions of their care. The research findings are presented to Medicare-approved hospitals to use the information for continuous improvement and to enhance the patient experience.

This data was also used to benchmark against other facilities in the Carolinas HealthCare System (CHS), which provides management assistance to St. Luke's. The patient surveys provided important feedback to assist in continually assessing how hospitals are doing as a place to work, a place to practice medicine and a place to receive care.

"Through dedication and determination of our teammates, St. Luke's Hospital has distinguished itself as an employee and provider of choice," said Ken Shull, chief executive officer for the private, not-for-profit community hospital.

"As St. Luke's focuses on customers' needs and expectations, there is also the continued focus on quality patient care by following practices and protocols that have been proven to insure the best outcome for our patients," Shull said. "By measuring patient satisfaction, we know where we can improve.

"National recognition like these Four and Five Star Awards confirms what we believe-that St. Luke's is a great place for attentive and personalized care. At St. Luke's Hospital, we remain committed to providing exceptional care, and we believe you should not have to travel away from friends and family for excellent care."
