St. Luke's Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Reengage in life, pain-free

TOTAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT and REVERSE SHOULDER REPLACEMENT

Dr. Azar is an exceptional surgeon experiencing impeccable results through total shoulder replacement, a procedure for pain-free restoration of movement-related shoulder arthritis. Total shoulder replacement is an inpatient procedure done under general anesthesia.

We recommend the procedure for patients who do not respond to anti-inflammatory meds, corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, and lifestyle modifications. There are three types of shoulder replacement:

1. Total shoulder joint replacement (replacement of shoulder joint ball and socket).
2. Partial shoulder joint replacement. (humeral head (top of the arm bone) replacement).
3. Reverse total shoulder replacement.

Reverse total shoulder replacement reverses the positions of the artificial joint components; otherwise, it is the same as a total shoulder replacement. A reverse total shoulder treats shoulders with severe arthritis and rotator cuff tears. The reverse shoulder procedure limits movement after the procedure, but the shoulder pain is dramatically lower.

Conditions Requiring Shoulder Joint Replacement

• Shoulder arthritis that causes severe joint damage.
• A humeral head fracture or fracture of the articulating portion of the arm bone.

Total joint replacement allows patients to live pain-free lives, perform many movements, and reengage in many activities.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Patients can expect a one-to-three-night stay. Plan on resting at home for two weeks following surgery, with physical therapy commencing as soon as possible to aid recovery.
