St. Luke’s Horse Show Benefit Raised Funds for Orthopaedic
Equipment
If you think horses, hounds, and hospitals have nothing in common, think
again. On June 18, during the annual three-day Tryon Hounds Horse Show,
St. Luke’s Hospital Foundation hosted a grand affair featuring cocktails,
a catered dinner, and ringside venue to watch the heart-stopping $5,000
Mini Prix.
“It was truly a ‘simply smashing evening’ as the name
of the event implied,” said Phyllis Eifert, a member of the Hounds
and a trustee of the Hospital Foundation. “There were gorgeous hats
on the women and men—many people dressed in Royal Ascot attire and
it made it so much fun!”
The winner of the hat contest, Donna James, was thrilled to receive an
original Eifert drawing, framed by Robby Conn. A different Eifert sketch
was drawn as a door prize by Madelon Wallace.
“In hindsight,” says Beth Child, Executive Director of the
Hospital Foundation, “there should have been an award for the best-dressed
man. Major and Marilyn Schutt are newcomers to this area, and Mr. Schutt
was simply splendid in his top hat, waist coat, and medals! Dr. Tom McLeod
also deserves special mention.”
The incredible flowers, all arranged in individually-created pottery vases,
were prepared and donated by the talented Thomasine Richards. “I
wanted it to be a very special evening, especially for my dear friend
Pauline Russell, who couldn’t be there that night.”
Pauline’s husband, Vick, ended up winning the Mini-prix. There were
other winners that evening—the sponsors who gave so generously so
that $12,000 could be set aside for orthopaedic equipment at St. Luke’s.
“If a rider goes down anywhere in our area and breaks a bone, we
want to be able to give him or her the best care and attention possible.
You don’t have to go to Hendersonville or Spartanburg—we have
outstanding care right here in Polk County,” says Kathy Woodham,
Marketing Director at St. Luke’s Hospital.
“The Tryon Hounds wanted to reach out to the community, and kindly
gave us the venue for a great party and the use of their tent,”
adds Child. “We’re glad we had the opportunity to raise money
while watching such magnificent horses, along with parades and exhibitions
of border collies and the famous hounds themselves. It was a wonderful
evening, and we hope to make this a yearly event.”
St. Luke’s Hospital is a private, not for profit community hospital,
dedicated to providing exceptional care, close to home.
